How AI Boosts Human Expertise at Wolters Kluwer

On balance, there will be some jobs lost to artificial intelligence, and you can also expect AI to create other jobs. But at the global information services company Wolters Kluwer, AI is being infused into expert systems in a bid to augment lawyers, accountants, and other professionals with superior decision-making abilities.

The 180-year-old company originally encapsulated its knowledge and recommendations for specific professional domains in books, but today it has largely made the transition to digital technologies. The 180-year-old company originally encapsulated its knowledge and recommendations for specific professional domains in books, but today it has largely made the transition to digital technologies.

Thousands of companies around the world rely on Wolters Kluwer’s practice management software to automate core aspects of their businesses. That includes doctor’s offices that use its software make healthcare decisions in a clinical setting, corporate law offices that use its software to understand M&A activities, and accounting firms that use its software to craft tax strategies for high net-worth clients.

The dispensation of expert advice has always been Wolters Kluwer’s business model, whether through books stuffed with actuarial tables or through hand-written rules carefully coded into its software. So it’s no surprise that the company today is turning to powerful AI technology to take its expert systems to the next level…

“We’re providing this live feedback. As you’re typing, we’re providing question and suggestions for you live,” said Greg Tatham CTO Global Platforms. “AllegroGraph gives us a performant way to be able to just work our way through the whole knowledge model and come up with suggestion to the user in real time.”

Kafka Graph Streaming Pipeline with AllegroGraph

img img

AllegroGraph is used very often as an Entity Event Knowledge Graph platform. Our customers use the entity-event approach in diverse settings like a call center, a hospital, in insurance, in aviation and even in finance. AllegroGraph as an entity-event knowledge graph will accept incoming events, do instant queries and analytics on the new data and then store events and results. AllegroGraph is geared to high speed inserts so in general can keep up with high business loads but for several reasons it is advantageous to couple AllegroGraph with Apache Kafka. Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed event streaming platform used by thousands of companies for high-performance data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications.

Gruff v8 – Now Available!

New Features Include:

img

By augmenting Knowledge Graphs with visualizations, users can determine insights that would otherwise elude them. Gruff’s dynamic data visualizations increase users’ understanding of data by instantly illustrating relevant relationships, hidden patterns and data’s significance to outcomes. Gruff also helps make data actionable by displaying it in a way that decision-makers can see the significance of data relative to a business problem or solution.

Gruff enables users to create visual knowledge graphs that display data relationships in views that are driven by the user. Ad hoc and exploratory analysis can be performed by simply clicking on different graph nodes to answer questions. Gruff’s unique ‘Time Machine’ feature provides the capability to explore temporal context and connections within data. The visual query builder within Gruff empowers both novice and expert users to create simple to highly complex queries without writing any code

  • Now Browser Based
  • Graphical View with new “Time Machine” feature – See the shape and density of graph data evolve over time
  • Tabular view – Understand objects as a whole
  • Outline view – Explore the often hierarchical nature of graphs
  • Query view – Write Prolog or SPARQL queries
  • Graphical Query Builder – Create queries visually via drag and drop

Bloor Research Positions AllegroGraph as a “Champion”.

A graph database is one that stores data in terms of entities and the relationships between entities. A variant on this theme are RDF (resource description framework) databases which store data in the format subject-predicate-object, which is known as a triple.

Both graph and RDF databases may be native products or they may be built on top of other database types. Most commonly, other database types are forms of NoSQL database though there are some relational implementations.
